Does the nervous system play a much greater role in infectious disease than we currently understand?

Some of my work was recently published in the Pathways magazine, issue 73. The article discusses three cases of conjoined twins where one of the twins became sick with an “infectious disease” whilst the other twin remained completely healthy. How is it possible the infectious disease wasn’t transmitted to the other twin, given they were exposed to the same environmental conditions and were always in very close proximity to each other? In all three cases, the twins shared the same blood supply, but had separate central nervous systems. Does the nervous system play a much greater role in infectious disease than we currently understand?
